Chapter 21

East Berlin

Erich Mielke, as he sat pompously in his office within the well protected Stasi building, talked a blue streak about the obvious and inevitable future of Europe under communism, from the Russian-Polish border all the way down to Gibraltar. By 1970, Mielke proclaimed, driven by visionary leaders like Stalin and Ulbricht, “all praise to both of these comrades,” he said, all of mainland Europe would have joined the Socialist revolution..

“Even Spain? Portugal?” Drucker asked.

“All fascism will be eradicated from Europe,” Mielke said. “That is incontestable.”

“Absolutely,” said Drucker.

Every few minutes, and the meeting went on for at least an hour, during which Drucker was hesitant to look at his watch, Comrade Mielke would solicit a reaction.

“Natürlich stimmst du zu,” he would say. “Of course, you agree.”

It wasn’t a question. It was a statement. Disagreement was not an option.

“Natürlich,” Drucker would answer. Or, “Klar, ich stimme zu! ” Or, “Ja, gerne!”

Markus Drucker, sat in front of Mielke with no one else in the room, listening intently to the dangerous fool, feigning interest, asking a key question here and there, and being quick, whenever the was a gap in the dialogue, to agree wholeheartedly. “Natürlich stimme ich zu!”

Eventually, through a gray haze of cigarette smoke that lasted more than an hour, Comrade Mielke meandered around to two assignments which Drucker was to accept and “complete.”

Stasi printers and engravers were preparing a West German passport for Drucker. He was to have a photo taken before leaving the Stasi building that morning. He was to return in two days to collect his new identity. With it, he would receive money to finance a brief trip abroad.

Drucker was then to travel to England via a soft route, the ferry from Amsterdam was recommended. Passports were required but no records were kept by the Dutch whom Mielke described as “drunken but useful fools.”

Drucker would then continue by bus to London where he would rendezvous with a young Dutch-born naturized Englishman named George Behar. Behar had been in the British diplomatic service but had recently been a prisoner of war in North Korea for two years, his country having foolishly allowed their diplomats to be taken prisoner by “forces of national liberation from the North,” as Mielke called them.

“Our fellow comrades in Soviet intelligence say that the man is ready to act as a double agent. Behar will know who you are and why you are reaching out to him. Have a private conversation and report your impressions.”

“I would be honored to do this,” Drucker said. “Should I bring a team? I have a young man and woman who—”

“No!” Mielke said sharply. “Absolutely not!”

Mielke’s dark eyes bored into his guest as he spoke. For a moment, Drucker felt a tremor of fear, as if he suspected that Mielke could read his innermost thoughts. Drucker tried to focus on the assignment as described. He suppressed the thoughts that revolved around this aging fool.

“You are with me so far, yes.” Miele said. Again a statement, not a question.

“Klar,” said Drucker.
